Frequently Asked Questions

On this page we try to answer some basic questions about tree trimming and our services. If you have questions that are not addressed here, you’re always welcome to contact us.

There is a need for systematic pruning during the first 30 years of a tree’s life. This formative pruning will improve structure, reduce hazards and save money in the long-term. Establishing good structure and form in young trees will prevent future hazards and liability. Common problems like included crotches and multiple leaders are easy to correct in young trees, but difficult to fix in larger older trees. Furthermore, consistent pruning saves labor and money by reducing the destruction of property due to tree failure, high pruning costs to remove large limbs, and liability. Meanwhile, it increases the lifespan of trees, thereby reducing removal, planting and establishment costs.

Our Arboristcrew® members are trained by our Certified Arborist, Charles Saxe, to prune trees according to the Tree Care Industry approved ANSI A300 Standards. We are Surgeons for your Trees®. These standards were developed by the ANSI-accredited Standards Committee (ASC) A300, and as stated on the Tree Care Industry Association’s website:

“The standards dictate the requirements and recommendations of the tree care industry for satisfactory performance of tree care maintenance. This means tree care companies who perform work according to ANSI A300 standards are following accepted industry practices for tree care maintenance operations. Training young trees will improve their health, structure, safety and longevity. Properly pruning trees will encourage trunk taper, early rapid growth and good selection of permanent main branches.

Wait one year after planting to remove branches unless they are dead, dying or broken.

Young stressed or sickly trees shall be minimally pruned or not cut at all. Stressed trees of any age or size should be minimally pruned to prevent additional stress to the tree.

Crown thinning, reduction and restoration can be used on mature trees that have been neglected if it is thought that pruning will contribute to improved health or structure.

  • Move vehicles and lawn or garden equipment from the area where the trees are to be pruned.
  • Unlock your gate when you know the crews are in the area.
  • Make sure animals are leashed or secured.
